The Malayan Trilogy: a reading & discussion presented by Cape Poetics

"No English novelist has created Asian characters that are more convincing… Burgess presents all these people with an impartial generosity; and the steamy, noisy, confused world they live in is conveyed with knowledge and skill." - New Statesman

The Malayan Trilogy, the famous classic series of three novels by acclaimed writer Anthony Burgess has been as coloured and venerated over the past 50 years as it has been slated and criticised. Written and set mostly during the post-war era of the Malayan period, just before independence from the British, the novels describe with spectacular detail, with as much humour as there is drama, the lives of the Malayan people and their British colonisers at that historic period.

Why has this series been described as the most masterly literary work to have emerged from the pen of a British writer on the Malayans of that age? Why has it been equally regarded as a highly controversial work by critics over the last few decades?

Join us for readings of selected excerpts, with exposition and discussion of the themes, context and relevance of the work. With introduction by Prof. Dr. Ghulam-Sarwar Yussof, and readings by Gan Teik Chee and Himanshu Bhatt (photo left).

Choo Beng Teong: The bird paintings of Choo Beng Teong are unique in that each and every one was once an actual photograph -- or a montage of several. That end product is the result of meticulous accuracy and much jungle trekking.

"Some might sneer at my technique, saying that my style has somehow diluted the artistic process," said Choo. "But it is through this method that I can achieve ultimate accuracy of each bird I paint."

And to achieve that ultimate accuracy, Choo would go to the deepest of forests to capture a shot of anything on wings. His bird photography expedition has taken him all around the country, to places like Maxwell Hill and Fraser's Hill (where the above photo was taken), and to more far flung places like Brunei, Nepal, Bhutan and India.

Much effort is invested to get an accurate representation of the bird that he painted. Choo never paints a bird from imagination, and rarely from another person's photograph. "You need to have seen the bird yourself in order to get it right.''

By just weaving a tapestry of colours on canvas with his fine, meticulous brush strokes, Choo evokes passion and sentiment in his art, giving life to birds and the environment of the rainforest. Every brush stroke adds details and texture to each feather of the birds, with finesse and clarity. He painstakingly creates and captures all the grace, the posture and vibrant colours of the feathers that makes his painting special about his subjects in their glory.

See some of his creations live at the September Little Penang Street Market. Prints of his work are also on sale at affordable prices.
