Little Penang Street Market marks its First Anniversary

To celebrate the happy occassion, the Market showcased Di Ambang Merdeka 2007 with YB Siti Farida Arshad, Penang State Assembly Woman for Telok Bahang, and Rumah Nur Balik Pulau.

The July Market displayed an array of art and crafts, with demonstration stalls along with some of Malaysia's spectacular Malay wedding traditions – the folding of sireh and towels, the making of egg flowers and Gendang Silat.

Special stalls from Balik Pulau
YB Siti Farida Arshad brought us five special stalls showcasing – sumptuous kampung delights, traditional Malay wear including batik garments, seashell craft from Telok Bahang, popular fruits from Balik Pulau, nutmeg juice and chicken rice.

As part of the celebration, Little Penang joined hands with The Penang Players to bring you Book Readings where you can meet esteemed Malaysian Authors, purchase autographed books, listen to extracts from their latest books and even read with them.

The Book Reading session this July featured Beth Yahp - writer and librettist. Beth Yahp short fiction, essays and articles have appeared in a range of anthologies, magazines and newspapers in Australia, South-east Asia and Europe, and she has edited or co-edited several collections of stories and essays. LIVE Music at Little Penang!

Once again, we had the privilege of listening to or watching a fantastic array of performance talents. First up was Voce, comprising Daniel, Noel, Oliver and Stefan. For 30 minutes, they entranced the audience with their wonderful singing, their beautiful harmonies continually eliciting spontaneous applause from the large crowd. An extremely talented quartet, we look forward to seeing them again and urge people not to miss them.

Later we had T-Virus, again showing breakdancing skills that had the audience in raptures. This was followed by Sam Ponnudorai, whose exquisite guitar technique and matching voice was a treat for marketeers - it is is wonderful that Little Penang can get such seasoned performers.

Finally, Paku, long-standing supporters of LPSM, played a set brimming with their usual talents and self-composed songs. Many thanks to all of them.
