Ronggeng Merdeka

In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Merdeka, Ombak Ombak ArtStudio will present a 10 minutes excerpt of their musical drama in June 2007 featuring Penang's journey to Merdeka. Ronggeng Merdeka features the sung stories of Penang residents from the 1930s, through the Japanese Occupation, up to the period of Merdeka.

It captures the rhythms and sounds of school, street life and the trades of the diverse communities of Penang through song and dance performed by 30 young musicians, dancers and actors.

This performance is a sequel to the highly acclaimed 2006 performance entitled Kisah Pulau Pinang which was performed as part of the performances in the Heritage Heboh Street Festival on 15 July 2006.

Henna painting – the creation of beautiful temporary skin art

Thanalaxmi, 35, has always loved drawing and beautiful things. This mother of a 12 year old has used her eye for beauty and her steady hand to create beautiful designs in Henna, used today as body art. Although Tamil educated she speaks Malay, Chinese and English. Thana will be at the market not just to do Henna drawing but also to do face threading for those who dare exchange a few seconds of pain for a smooth, hair free face!
