Previous Markets: 25 March 2007 Making of Flower Garlands Garland Making is a long tradition among all communities in Penang. Flower garlands are used for self adornment as well as to bless auspicious occasions. The Little Penang Street Market on March 25th will feature the art of making garlands from 10.30 am to 3.00 pm. Members of the Hindu Sangam. Gelugor Branch will be there to teach garland making and enlighten us on the use of garlands in Penang's varied culture. Sarawakian Crafts Person Meet Luwie anak Kudi She was just 10 years old when she followed her mother into the jungles of Bintulu, Sarawak , to help collect 'buluh', the raw material for making the lovely mats and baskets of Sarawak. Today Luwie anak Kudi is 60 years old, voyaged through a tough life from Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur and into Penang. She still remembers the skills she learnt as a child at her mother's feet. Luwie will be bringing some of her craft to the market where she will also show us some of the weaving. Luwie comes to us through the work of Community Works, an arm of the market which works with marginalised peoples to create a positive change to their lives. This is done by providing a creative edge to their existing merchandise, designing new products and providing new economic avenues to support their work. The Second Hand Book Store Little Penang street has now established the 'Bookshop', a second hand book store at the market and we're collecting old books for sale. All proceeds generated from this stall will be used to help sustain Little Penang Street Market. The Market hopes to renew the interest in reading and hope to see people, young and old, come to the bookstore from miles around to browse in a comfortable environment and make new friends in old pages.
