Batik with Rozana

Her grandmother loved art and owned a shop which made Kain Songket. Rozana Mohamed spent many hours as a child, watching how this beautiful cloth was made, admiring the brilliant, entwined colors along with the craft person's skill and creativity. Today at 40, this young woman from Johor Baru, is a batik artist and designer in her own right.

"Batik is very interesting and unique. If you experiment with technique, you can get amazing results", she tells us in a soft voice. And rightly so, as her work reflects her words.

Swirls of color intermingle to produce shades that seem almost '60s in theme. With more brilliant blends, she manages to transport a warm sunset onto cloth or even the subtle harmony in the flush of autumn onto large swatches which can be used as dividers in a room.

When asked when she began her art career, she said, "I knew since secondary school I could draw and sketch. Then I learnt the process of batik from a friend. When I started to work in batik, my father was so proud that he kept telling his friends about it and would sell all my work to them!"

Rozana got her basic training in UITM where she received her Diploma in Fine Arts in 1988. She then began a career as a full time batik artist and batik designer.

Her artistic ability is also expressed in her paintings, both in water color and acrylic. In 1988 she was awarded the first prize in the Johor Watercolor Competition. Today Rozanna does her painting in her home studio which is also her workshop and gallery.
To date she has two shows to her name, the first was Adi Warna in USM and the other at Pelita Hati House of Art in Bangsar in 2007.

Her 3 children must have been the inspiration she needed to start teaching children to do small works of batik. She teaches tie and dye techniques to children who find the bright colors, the hands-on approach and the final 'wow' factor of the product so attractive.

Rozana will be at the April Market where she will be teaching the basics of batik to children and adults alike.
